How to Master The Changes In Your Life

One of the simplest ways to avoid issues and better navigate change through life is to incorporate the habit of living proactively rather than reactively.

In Life, this creates a path of least resistance by fostering a smoother transition from one stage to the next. It applies equally to our mental being as well as our physical being. 

Most people, spiritual or not, would agree that Life itself presents a myriad of lessons resulting in our learning. Most of these learning experiences are precipitated by a life change. In fact, many times they are presented to us in various forms until the lessons themselves are learned.

Sensory acuity is a learned skill alerting us when it is time to move on to life’s next lesson or stage. Honing this skill requires that we remain vigilant, aware, and above all open to it. Gut feelings, inner voices, and intuitions are expressions of just such a capability. Be uncompromising in your trust of them.

For those who dislike change, life has a particular default built-in. This “default” forces change upon when we are unwanting or unwilling to do so ourselves. 

Change or be changed. Forward or backward. Rise or sink.

Indeed, it requires greater effort to retain a certain status quo. Change is inevitable — evolution by revolution. The trick lay in not fighting it but learning to transition smoothly between one stage of life and the next. Our own mental and physical wellbeing depends on it.

As alluded to above, it has been my observation that Life has built into it something akin to an alarm clock. This Life Lesson Clock, if you will, begins sounding when it is time for us to change and begin the next subsequent stage of our lives.

As with the alarm clock that resides on your nightstand, Life’s Clock to has a “snooze” button. Though take heed. Press that snooze button one time too many and the once sublime chime will become anything but.

Here are the three stages of Life’s Lesson Clock as I have noted. See if any of them rings a bell.

The First Alarm: Subtle Reminders and Seeming Coincidence

The First Alarm is hardly noticeable. Unless you’re living life in a state of significant presence and awareness, it will most likely slip by totally unnoticed.

Inner intuition and gut feelings are the telltale signs of this first alarm. Something subtly arouses your curiosity, your suspicion, your fear, your desire. You may take conscious note of it for only a brief moment.

This life alarm can and does take the form of synchronicity, repetitive patterns, and sensory cues.

Sights, sounds, or persons arise in the periphery of your life, either directly or indirectly related to the subject matter of the required change. These clues can and do formulate from several sources, including print or radio advertising, acquaintances, strangers, or social media feeds, to name but a few.

That passing glance at a newsstand, the subway station advertising banner you whizzed by or an overheard conversations between strangers. All are perfect examples of this low key signpost.

They transpire within a relatively short period after your first noting the life change you should be undertaking.

Due to the inferred nature of this first life alarm, most people do not recognize it for what it is, and consequently, the message goes unheeded. Our first opportunity at being proactive now passed the Life Lesson Clock moves on to its second alarm.

The Second Alarm: Gentle Prodding and Pushing

“For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.” – Kahlil Gibran

And so it is with Life Lessons. When the time is nye, it is indeed nye. To paraphrase the renowned French poet Victor Hugo, “Nothing is as powerful as a lesson whose time has come.”

You are after all learning on behalf of All That Is. Therefore, as you learn, so it is with Source. It runs corresponding to Its timetable, not yours.

Life’s Lesson Clocks second alarm arrives with a greater sense of urgency and call to action. A purposeful attempt to have you sit up and pay considerably more attention.

If astute, you will notice events in your Life beginning to push and prod you in a particular direction gently.

It is with this second alarm that the majority of us gain at the very least a cursory awareness of our need to change. It may be our environment that needs improvement.

Perhaps, it’s the need for new positive and empowering friends.  Then again, a more supportive and loving partner. A more inspiring and uplifting career. Whatever the life circumstance, the second alarm will bring it to light.

Of course, recognizing the need to change and undertaking the steps to do so are two entirely different things.

Being creatures of habit, we tend to approach change with a certain standoffish procrastination. Slaves to the Pain/Pleasure Principle we view change is an oft evil best avoided due to its inherent stressors.

The second alarm is by far more persistent than the first. Situations in your Life become noticeably less tenable.

Lifestyle disagreements with friends may suddenly develop. Personal dissatisfaction leads to arguments with your partner putting a strain on your relationship. Unforeseen tensions arise with coworkers creating an uncomfortable toxic workspace.

A growing brooding or dissatisfaction of one’s current life circumstance begins to permeate your self-talk and inner reflections.

Once restricted to the periphery, visual and auditory clues now make their presence more readily known in our immediate environment.

Keywords will begin to trigger thoughts and ideas, urging us to undergo the required change. Most of us, of course, will still resist or dismiss these signals out of hand. Other’s still will recognize them for what they are while blindly justifying their steadfastness to the status quo. We are a stubborn lot, after all.

The Third Alarm: Life Crisis 

Above all things, pain is this worlds greatest motivator. Oddly, we will do more as a species to avoid pain than we will do to gain pleasure. It’s just human nature. The Pain/Pleasure Principle that guides us every day.

This is why Life brings pain into play should we refuse to heed it’s first two previous alarms. Such change is predestined and must occur for our growth.

All of your avoidance, delay, and deferring tactics come to a screeching halt when life finally and abruptly decides for you. The choice to change once yours is quickly snatched from you and instead forced upon you.

No longer an option, your path is undeniably and unequivocally laid out before you. You must, and you will change. It is self-evident now, well beyond conjecture.

Sadly, the third alarm often takes the shape of a tragedy. Sudden death in the family, that devastating job loss, a painful marital affair, or an unexpected serious illness. It matters not the form, shape or guise such crisis takes. Its effect will be significant, looming, and inescapable.

Reverberating and resounding its message shall be. You MUST change, and you will change. NOW. The preordained subsequent life lesson has begun in earnest.

Epilogue

Some believe that Life itself seeks to point you in one particular direction or another. Fate, to use the colloquial term.

Each pathway leading to a predestined lesson with its subsequent knowledge and wisdom. Experiences that you yourself have preordained prior to birth.

Others subscribe to the notion that Life is simply a random generation. Nothing more than incoherent meaningless chaos. The product of arbitrary chance and circumstance. An unpremeditated throw of the dice.

As for me, regardless of whether Life is divinely inspired or not, things do often appear to happen in threes. My observational truth bears witness to this. The evidence of trinities dates back far and wide having touched every culture and run through every epoch.

It has only been in retrospect that I have come to see and know the Three Life Alarms for what they are. 

Perhaps I could sum them up as such so that they may be more recognizable when they present themselves.

The first, a gentle tap on the shoulder, a soft whisper in the ear.

“Maybe you should change.”

The second, like a shove in the back or a wagging finger.

“You really should change.”

The third and most potent, akin to a punch in the face or a kick to the stomach.

“Change immediately. Right here and right now.”

By choosing to live proactively and pay attention to Life’s alarms we may sail smoothly from one shore to the next. All the while, maximizing our learning potential and personal growth. 

Living reactively, doggedly ignoring Life’s signs and signals. We are forever playing catchup, moving sluggishly about as life tosses you from one rocking shoal to the next. 

The choice is yours, for now.

But learn, you will. Learn, you must.
